Orphan Black – A Fedora of Crazy Set at a Jaunty Angle

In addition to being a designer and habitual filmmaker, I’m a fangirl. Perhaps you’ve noticed.

I have many many many words of kindness and fangirl worship to shower on Orphan Black, but my best advice to people unfamiliar with it is to watch the pilot. I binge-watched episodes 2-7 last week within the span on 3-4 hours and honestly, that’s something that is usually difficult for me because of my ADD tendencies when it comes to television and things in general. Orphan Black is like that one weird random book you pick up and keep flipping through, spellbound, until finally you realize you’ve come to the last chapter and blast it, you want more.

To digress, it’s a great show. The lead Tatiana Maslany is the greatest thing since the invention of the ice cream cone. To re-inforce this idea, I’m pic-spamming stills from E.4 — Effects of External Conditions. This is — I think — the third meeting between our protagonist clone Sarah, and Ukranian psycho serial killer clone Helena.

Sarah Manning, demonstrating the inevitability…

…of encounters with creepy-ass people in oddly lit parking garages.

Sarah evidently quite doubts the sensibility of having lunch with whimsical serial killer clones she meets in garages

Jello: #1 consumable amongst psychologically disturbed clones

D’aww

4_10

But maybe not

4_13

I always LOL at the angry black girl on the right hand corner

4_15

I just want to pat her psychotic little blonde head

4_19

Sarah would rather punch her in the hair

4_22

But Helena doesn’t care because she’s awesome in a weird “please call the paramedics” sort of way

4_23

D’AWWW

4_24

Not so d’awww. If you’re unfamiliar with this scene, Sarah is covering herself by jamming a knife near Helena’s leg. Helena currently has a gun (or maybe a switchblade in her boot) kicked up against Sarah’s…crotch, apparantly?

4_25

Helena already got impaled by Sarah a few episodes back, so that would be boring

4_26

Wisely, she decides against it. She may be psychotic, but she’s not stupid.

Crazy Eyes H.

4_33

Imma Cut A Bitch Manning.

4_29

Helena writes her sane doppelganger a love note/murder threat

4_30

Mostly it’s a murder threat.

4_32

She then leaves and says goodbye. She’s a very polite mental patient.

D’AWWWWWWWW ADORABLE FACTOR 5000. But also, insane.

4_31

It’s a weird relationship.

The only thing I worry about is the same thing I worry about with all my shows — reliance on ‘ship (relationship). There’s plenty of it to pick from and root for, but hopefully it will end up winding more into the show’s intricate conspiracy plot threads and avoid becoming a standalone watching option, because I turn that shit off pretty quickly.

Regardless, seriously. Watch. This. Show.
